Teach me, Lord, the way of your decrees, that I may follow it to the end. Give me understanding, so that I may keep your law and obey it with all my heart. Direct me in the path of your commands, for there I find delight. Turn my heart toward your statutes and not toward selfish gain. Turn my eyes away from worthless things; preserve my life according to your word.
Fulfill your promise to your servant, so that you may be feared. Take away the disgrace I dread, for your laws are good. How I long for your precepts! In your righteousness preserve my life.
We tend to push away from rules and correction. If we are honest, none of us really like being told what we should or should not do. We like the autonomy of deciding for ourselves. We believe that rules are synonymous with restriction. But what if the rules and guidelines that God gives us and calls us to were actually given so that we would experience the greatest freedom and flourishing? What if He isn't holding out on us, but like any good Father, He knows better than we do, see's clearer than we do, and is patiently leading us.
If we can truly embrace that God IS love and that everything He does, or does not do is born purely of love, than the idea of trusting in His expectations and guidelines can become a gracious freedom rather than restriction.
Do you delight in following Him, abiding in Him, and obeying Him? What keeps you from that kind of childlike faith and trust?
Confess your pride, selfishness, and desire to control. Ask Him to speak to You through His Word and to give you a tender heart to hear and respond.
