“Two things I ask of you, Lord; do not refuse me before I die: Keep falsehood and lies far from me; give me neither poverty nor riches, but give me only my daily bread. Otherwise, I may have too much and disown you and say, ‘Who is the Lord?’ Or I may become poor and steal, and so dishonor the name of my God.
We believe in a loving, caring God who is intimately involved in who we are, what we need, and how we relate to Him. He wants us to trust Him, rely on Him, and ask Him to care for our needs. The challenge for us is patience and accepting provision for what we need more than what we want. The beauty of this prayer in Proverbs is the authors clarity of his own weakness and needs. The more we have, the less we tend to remain dependent on Him. The less we have, the more we tend to take things into our own hands and try and make them happen in our strength. So we pray, Lord give me what I need, no more, no less.
Take some time and reflect. Thank the Lord for the way he provides for you and your family. The job you have, the spouse you have, He is a gracious father who provides. Also take some time to reflect on what you want; does it align with His desires, His Kingdom? Ask Him to give you a heart that wants what he wants and that is satisfied with all He has given.
